My art has grown greatly throughout this class because I did a lot more work on what each piece means to me and making sure they all had meaning that was personal and specific to me. In the beginning of the semester, I was still looking at these projects as assignments and this is shown through the first assemblage project. Although I like the final product, I do feel that a lot of what I picked was very random and I didn’t really think about the deeper meaning behind any of the parts of the piece, even the color I picked somewhat at random because I didn’t think about what the color would say about the piece. This started to change a little in the second assemblage project because I was using influential themes in my life to motivate the project, however I feel that I wasn’t necessarily able to translate these themes into the piece as well as I would have liked. I often choose to make art with bright colors and themes and I think these first two pieces definitely showed my style of art, however I don’t know that they were able to encapsulate me. I think that the trophy of misunderstanding project was the best one I have done in terms of choosing specific themes and translating them into my art. I think that the amount of thinking that went into each portion of the project made me able to bring the themes through the art to the viewer. The main themes that motivate me not just in that project but in all of my art are the idea of shock in a viewer with the use of bright colors and pops of intensity in the pieces I make. I want them to draw attention, even if it isn’t always good. I expanded a lot on my themes of insecurity and the way I want to be viewed instead of how others view me. This class has been very important for my artistic development because I was able to have a lot more freedoms of themes and styles within the constraints of a project, which has been really helpful for me.
