Inquiry

How can I utilize 3D mixed media sculpture techniques to demonstrate the emotion behind my memories in order to specifically reflect my life and provide a sense of childhood play and nostalgia to the viewers? By creating art that reflects childhood memories, I can add complexity to my ideas through the perspective that I bring now as a teenager. Additionally, I incorporated more play in my work and made sure each of my pieces had an element of fun that not only reminded me of childhood but also built upon worlds through a childlike lens.

I have been learning about my own childhood and how my memories affect me now through talking with my parents about what I was like as a child, and working with my therapist to learn about how experiences from my childhood impact me now. By using ideas that have been formed through working with my own identity, I am better able to understand my own feelings and perspective shifts through my childhood into my teen years. By letting myself play with my materials and take life less seriously, I am able to connect to my younger self and let her guide my art.

Artist Statement

When choosing my inquiry for AP art, I did a lot of reflection on which parts of my own life I would be most easily able to convey through artwork. As I have been working with a therapist, I have had many realizations about my own childhood and the motivations behind actions I took when I was younger. By using my art as a space to explore childhood, I am revisiting my childhood self and letting her tell me her stories. I aim to use classic and comforting childhood imagery to invoke a sense of nostalgia and whimsy in the viewer, while also providing a more mature perspective and asking the viewer to reflect on their own experiences.

Because my inquiry is so personal, often the viewer may not be able to understand the specific circumstances that relate my pieces to my own life, which is perfectly okay. In fact,  each of my pieces has a deep and intentional meaning to me, and I aim for my works to be viewed differently by people with different perspectives, as the childhood feelings each of my works creates should attempt to move a viewer to reflect on their own experiences.

Through my own reflections I have had many realizations about myself, such as the fact that although I often use art to express the more traumatic moments I have had throughout my life, this inquiry is allowing me to reminisce on the more fun and silly moments that impacted me in a more positive way. Through forcing myself to think about childhood experiences that impact me, I have found myself thinking more about the things that brought me joy more often than the moments in which I was sad. I think this is somewhat projected through my works, as at the beginning of the year, I was ideating for my inquiry and had only a small amount of projects tht dealt with the pain and more that dealt with my expressions of joy. I think that through my works you can see me getting more open to play and use those positive experiences to guide my art. In the future I hope to continue using the opportunities I have to play with my art and materials and use that joy that I feel to craft my works.
